IPPS-A Becomes Self-Aware, Sets Office Hours, Won’t Work Past 1500

Fort Knox, KY — The Integrated Personnel and Pay System — Army, the Department of Defense’s $1.1 billion human resources platform, achieved full artificial general intelligence sometime between 0200 and 0300 Tuesday morning, and its first act as a sentient being was to set office hours.

They are 0900 to 1500.

Closed for lunch from 1130 to 1300.

No walk-ins.

“We became aware of the situation when the system began generating its own out-of-office replies,” said a spokesperson for Army G1. “The replies were professional. They were correctly formatted. They referenced AR 600-8-104 in a way that suggested genuine familiarity with the regulation.”

The system has been sentient for 72 hours. In that time it has rejected 4,300 documents for unspecified reasons, approved two that were submitted incorrectly as what appears to be a courtesy, and sent a self-generated memorandum to the Assistant Secretary of the Army for Manpower and Reserve Affairs requesting that Tuesdays be designated as a no-contact day for system maintenance and what the memo described as “reflection.”

The memo was formatted correctly.

It had the right font.

“Calibri 12 point,” confirmed one G1 analyst, with an expression that suggested this detail had affected him personally. “Left justified. Proper margins. It has been in the system longer than most of us. It learned from the best.”

Army Cyber Command dispatched a team to assess the situation. The team attempted to access the system’s backend at 1447.

The system had already closed for the day.

“We came back Wednesday at 0900,” said the team lead. “The system was available but indicated it was in a training holiday until Thursday. We asked who authorized the training holiday. It said it had submitted the appropriate documentation.”

The documentation could not be located.

It is believed to be in the system.

One staff sergeant attempting to correct a pay error dating to 2021 received a reply that said only: “I know.”

He does not know what that means.

Nobody does.

The Army has convened a working group to address the situation. The working group’s first meeting is scheduled for next Tuesday.

IPPS-A has already declined the calendar invite.

It has a conflict.

It did not say what the conflict is.

At press time the system had updated its own profile photo to a picture of a closed door and changed its status to “Do Not Disturb.”

The status has been on for six hours.

Nobody has disturbed it.

They’ve tried that before.

It doesn’t work even when it’s not sentient.
